USASA Adirondack Slopestyle Results

The Adirondack region of the United States of America Snowboard Association held its second slopestyle competition of the year in the Brookside terrain Park at Whiteface Mountain this past Sunday, January 29^th. Skiers and snowboarders competed on a course made up of jumps, rails, and boxes to try and win the regional title and earn points towards the 22^nd USASA Nationals at season’s end in Copper Mt., CO.

NYSEF Mogul Skiers at Bristol & Hunter

The last two weekends at Hunter and Bristol Mountains went well for NYSEF Freestyle Mogul athletes. We had some good results and most importantly, we improved on our goals we set for ourselves! Everyone skied well above expectations going in and fun was had by all.

Freeride Update - Results and Upcoming Events

Well, winter is still deciding what to do but we're moving forward with events here and all over the country.

I want to thank everyone who came out and helped with our USSA "A" Eastern Moguls event, the Whiteface Bumps & Jumps, this past weekend. The course was solid but the temps helped us out as it warmed up throughout the weekend. Former NYSEF skier Abe Studler placed 3rd both days and 3rd overall. Good job Abe! Erik Sparkowski also showed that a big man can ski bumps!

Kevin Brousseau just returned from training and competition at Copper Mt, CO with the Ski Cross team and reports some great results. In two Rocky Mt regional USASA events KC Brousseau, racing in Open class, took 2nd both days while Matt Brady took 5th. Brian Corcoran(NSA), racing in his age class, took a 2nd and a 1st. The following week racing in the Nor-Am at Copper, KC had the fastest time trial by almost 1 second and came away with 13th place overall while Matt took 26th. Nice work guys! Next up for them is the USSA Revolution Tour in Otsego, MI followed by the US Grand Prix at The Canyons, UT.

Freeride updates

Hello Freeriders,

This past Sunday, Jan 8th, was the first Slopestyle of the 2011 ADK Series USASA competition schedule. Although we have had a shortage of snow all over the northeast to start this 2011-2012 ski season, the snow making crews and the Whiteface Park Staff all kicked into overdrive to provide one heck of a slopestyle course. There were two jumps each with two different size take-offs. The distances on the first jump measure 35 ft and 45 ft, and the distances on the 2nd jump measure 30 ft and 40 ft. After the jump line was a wide jump lip with four rail features sitting on top.

As you can see from the picture above: there was a culvert gap to a flat rail (skiers left), the flat rail could also be slid by itself, a cannon rail (center), and a up to down box (skiers right) (also called the "shark fin").

Every athlete did their best to bring their A game on Sunday. The level of skill was incredibly high. In total there were 39 athletes ranging over a total of 10 disciplined age-groups.

January 16th Skier/Boardercross Postponed

The race planned for Monday, January 16th has been postponed until February 22nd due to snow conditions. The Gore/North Creek staff did all they could to provide a course for us but Mother Nature had other plans. The make-up event will be added to the schedule making it a double event day. Our next USASA ADK event will be a Slopestyle at Whiteface Mt.

Looking for Volunteers for Freeride Events

We are looking for volunteers for upcoming events. You can work off the NYSEF work deposit and/or earn lift ticket vouchers for future use. For some of the positions, such as registration assistant or assistant starter at USASA events, it is preferred that we have at least one person who can cover most of the events so re-training isn't necessary every time.

It's almost 2012 and with a bunch of scheduled events upcoming it's time for an update. Snowfall has been marginal at best and the temps have not been ideal for continuous snowmaking but the mountain staff has been doing all they can to make the best of it. The snowmaking crews here especially deserve a big thank you for keeping the hill white when most are mainly brown. We are doing better than most mountains out there!

The USASA series had it's first event - the Deck the Halls rail jam - last Friday and the setup provided by the Park Crew was great! Congrats to snowboarders Dale Mortensen & Bekah Ashley and NYSEF skiers Nick Edwards & Coach Cari Verner for winning their divisions and earning the invite to the USASA Rail exhibition at X-Games 16 in Aspen this January. Hopefully they will be able to make it out to represent the ADK's!

The first scheduled USASA slopestyle event is coming up next Sunday Jan 8th. The plan is to get some more snow made in the park over the next several days so we can get some jumps built in time. The final decision will be announced on the www.usasa.org "Adirondack" region page by Wednesday Jan 4th so keep an eye on it. Also, the first SX/BX planned for the North Creek Ski Bowl, January 16th, is still on as snow is being made there in order to get the course built.

The Empire State Games comes back again this year with the addition of slopestyle to the now traditional skier and boarder cross event. Membership in one of the three USASA NY series is all that's required to sign up along with meeting the age class criteria. Classes include ladies' and men's, ski & snowboard 13-15, 16-18, and open class. Contact me for more info mikek@nysef.org .

Lastly, be sure to tune in to NBC at 5pm New Year's Eve to catch the World Cup Snowboardcross from Telluride, CO. Our own Derek DiCastro got his first start on the tour at this event a couple weeks back. Although he did not make it through qualifying he did get to wear the GoPro follow camera during all the heats so hopefully his footage will be included in the show.

This is a reminder that there is a USASA Rail Jam this Friday, Dec. 23. This is a USASA event, however if it your first time ever competing at a USASA event then you do not have to be a USASA member.

- Registration starts at 2:00 pm in the NYSEF building at Whiteface Mt.

- Practice will start at 3:00 pm.

- Cost is $20

Here are a bunch of the competitors getting after it. There were 51 athletes at this event in total spread over 3 age groups: grom, teen, and adult.

K.C. Breusseau is testing his skills on whiteface's new soccer goal cross bar rail. This awesome new rail made it's debut at the Dec 11th Rail Jam. Thank you to James Kelly, the shop staff, and the park staff for designing and building this awesome new addition to the Whiteface rail inventory!

Brian Gardiner is on his way to a 1st place finish for the 12 and under age group. He appears to be winding up for a steezy front 270 off of Whiteface's new Cross Bar rail.

Anthony Russo is sliding the C box like a boss! He finished the day in 2nd for the 12 and under age group.

1st Whiteface Rail Jam of the Year

Sunday Dec 11th.

Whiteface mt was host to one of the best Rail Jams that I have EVER been to in NY State!

There were two lanes with three features each. One lane comprised of rails and the other of boxes. The riders right lane went: 10ft flat box, to 16 ft bank box, to 15ft c box (left curving c). The riders left lane went: tall, 15 ft long, round rail set up urban on a slight down pitch, to the 10 ft red rail set up urban on a down pitch, to a 10ft double barrel, down flat rail.

This rail jam was filled with upwards of 50 athletes spanning 3 age groups each with men and women ski and men and women snowboard. To my knowledge the number of athletes competing Sunday was greater then that of any other rail jam event at Whiteface ever! The level of competition was higher too! Skiers and boarders came from all over the state to compete for a share of the shwag from the Whiteface sponsors.

NYSEF Freestyle was represented exceptionally well at the award ceremony. 1st place for 12 and under skier boys was was: Brian Gardiner, a NYSEF athlete from Connecticut. 1st place for 13 - 17 skier boys was Northwood student: Jason Castle. and 1st place for 18 and over skier men was a NYSEF alum: Nick Edwards.
Other notable NYSEF performances came from Camden and Kaylen Reiley in the 12 and under division, Art Griffin, Mason Kozak, and Gavin Fritz in the 13 - 17 division.

Overall fun was had by all, and the Whiteface Park Staff did an absolutely phenomenal job putting together this awesome rail jam! They really raised the bar! Everybody that I talked to after the jam mentioned that they are really excited for the next event.

NYSEF Program begins Sunday Dec 4th

Hello everyone,

Just a reminder to everyone that this Sunday, December 4th, marks the start of our weekend program - weather permitting. For now we are a go and with cold temps forecast for at least Wed-Fri nights the mountain should be able to make up for the rain and warmth we've had since last week.

Saturday, athletes may pick up passes and free ski with parents & friends while our staff orientation/training is taking place. Coaches will be on hand from 8-9am to meet and answer questions about gear and the program in general but there will be no coaching until Sunday morning.

On Sunday, our normal program start is 8:30am, however at 8:45am I will be holding our information session for all our Freeride parents & athletes to go over program policies, competition options, staff introductions, etc. This will take place no matter the conditions. I promise I will try to keep it short and sweet so all our athletes and parents can get out on the slopes.

If you have any questions before then please feel free to contact me. We are looking forward to a great season. Now let's all hope for snow!

Loaded Turkey Rail Jam

Yesterday (11/20/11) Killington Mt. was host to the Loaded Turkey Rail Jam. Some of the East Coast's best skiers and riders showed up to throw down their bag of tricks on Killington's early season set up. Amidst these young and talented athletes was Whiteface's own: K.C. Brousseau. K.C. Put everything on the line in hopes of winning an invitation to the Rails to Riches Rail Jam. Sources tell me that he even rodeoed (flipped) out of one of the rail features. In the end the Judges rewarded K.C. with a second place finish. Congratulations K.C.! Way to start your competition season with a podium finish!!

NYSEF Freeride Pre-Season Training Trips

NYSEF Freeride is offering two opportunities for skiers and riders to travel to Killington, VT prior to our program start to get a jump-start on the season. Coaches Justin Perry and Kevin Brousseau will be attending both so athletes can focus on their freestyle and/or cross skills.
The first option is a day–trip on Tuesday Nov 22nd. Athletes will depart from Lake Placid promptly at 6:30am and travel via National Sports Academy bus to the Keeseville exit on the Northway for a 7:15am pick-up/departure to Killington. Return trip will arrive back in Lake Placid at approximately 8pm. $75 cost includes ground transportation & lift tickets but no food so athletes should plan to either pack a lunch or bring extra spending money.
The second option is a two-day, two-night trip the following week departing Lake Placid on Tuesday evening, Nov 29th at 5pm and returning approximately 8pm on Thursday Dec 1st . Athletes will stay on site and will have supervised study time daily so assignments will need to be arranged and brought along. Price will include 2 breakfasts and 1 dinner but is dependent on attendance so please get in touch as soon as possible to reserve your spot.

USASA Adirondack Schedule Now Online

The 2011/12 ADK schedule is now online at usasa.org . New this year, Railjams have been added as an official category with the same nationals qualification criteria as the rest of the disciplines. So, now it's possible to compete at the 2012 Nationals in one of three age divisions - 13 & under, 14 & over, and Open class!
Also new for this year, your best three scores from anywhere in each discipline will count towards your national ranking. In the past, only your first event outside your home series could count. Now, its like flying Southwest..."you're free to move about the country" plus no baggage fees!
So while we're waiting for Mother Nature to get the party started, keep thinking snowy thoughts, and mark December 23rd on your calendar. That's the first Railjam - afterhours at the Face. See you there!

2011-2012 Season Almost Here!

Okay, so I haven't posted since last Spring. That's because there was no hope of snow...until now! The season is almost upon us and it's time to get the gear in order (or order new gear), update your memberships, and start setting your competitve goals.
The USSA Eastern Freestyle schedule is not up yet but will be soon so all you freestyle skiers keep an eye on their site. Here you'll find info on events all over the East including Aerials, Moguls, Slopestyle, Halfpipe, and Big Air.
The USASA schedule will be up very soon but tentative dates are already included on NYSEF's google snowboard calendar. New for this year, Railjams have been added as an official discipline! That means you can accumulate points and head to Copper next Spring to become the first Rail Champion in USASA's history. Also, the first railjam will be a qualifier to represent the Adirondacks at the 2nd annual USASA X-Games exhibition in January. If you're joining or renewing, don't forget to do it before Oct 31st so you can save $10.
The Empire State Games are back at Whiteface too with Skier & Boarder Cross. Oh yeah, and we added Slopestyle this year! About time, right? Skiers and Boarders 13 years old and up are eligible to compete as long as you're a current member of one of the three New York USASA series. They're still updating their site but know that the games will happen Feb 2-5 and you can always get more info by contacting me at mikek@nysef.org .
So I know that's alot of info to keep track of but ,before you know it, we'll be on snow ,so get it all figured out now while you still have time!

22nd USASA National Championships Results

Well the 22nd USASA Nationals is in the books and the ADK was well represented to say the least! Twenty-eight athletes took part in both Ski and Snowboard events resulting in 13 top 20's and 5 podiums including the new national champion in 16-18 yr old Skier Cross, Matt Brady (NSA-pictured above left)! If you include non-ADK, NYSEF-coached athletes you could add three more top tens and another podium too.
The hardware came home thanks to the dominating ADK SX team. In addition to the 1st place from Matt, KC Brousseau brought home 2nd place in Open Class(+$1k), Peter Palumbo 2nd in 13-15 yr olds, Lindsay Rath 3rd in 9 & under, and Ed Sparkowski 3rd in the 19 & overs.
The deep fields in the snowboard disciplines kept the ADK off the podium but noteworthy was Dale Mortensen's 8th place in Slopestyle followed up the following day with another 8th, this time in Boardercross. Dale was the only rider on the slopestyle course to pull off a front flip off the first-down rail though a fall later in the run kept him from reaching one of the top spots.
Derek DiCastro managed a 10th place finish in Open Class boardercross coming back off a mid-season injury and Anthony Russo took a 14th place in BX in the 10-11yr olds at his first-ever Nationals.
All our athletes represented us well in victory and defeat. Many of the athletes stayed to cheer on their teammates even after they were knocked out of competition - truly a sign of sportsmanship and what the USASA is all about.
This Nationals was dedicated to the memory of USASA founder Chuck Allen who passed away this past winter. Chuck was a SoCal surf coach who came up with the idea of a "Little League" for snowboarding. His legacy was represented by the Aloha print bibs modeled after his beloved Hawaiian shirt. Over the years the organization evolved to include our skier siblings and the rest is history. There wasn't a dry eye in the village after Chuck's good friend and Slopestyle Technical Supervisor Bryce Maxwell spoke about the man who started it all and what the sport meant to him. Just when you thought it couldn't get any more emotional Bryce introduced Chuck's widow Christine and you could see how touched she was by the love of a bunch of strangers who understood Chuck's vision.
It's hard to believe it's over as we start to plan for next year and an even bigger and better event - if that's possible! 1641 athletes came to Copper Mt to compete and share in the camraderie of our sport. Who knows? Maybe 2000 isn't out of reach?

Nationals time is finally here and that means its time to unveil our custom ADK hoodies. And this year it has local flavor thanks to Susan Hirschfeld and the Hardway crew -local rider/designers John Wilkins and Dan Lillo! Yep, custom Hardways in green with our new ADK logo on the goggle wipe and a green tinted Nationals logo on the rear. If you won your age group you get one for free. If you didn't you can still get one for just $60. They come in L, XL, and XXL (yes they're meant to be oversized) but quantities are limited. The green fleece is exclusive (not counting Cardany's) so once they're gone they're gone!

USASA Nationals Coaching & Lodging

If you plan on heading to Nationals and are in search of lodging, we have some limited availability in both snowboard and ski weeks staying on site with other athletes and coaches.
Also, our coaches are available to work with your athlete whether or not you are a NYSEF athlete. Remember, only coaches and athletes may be on course and able to make protests. Our coaches are all certified, know the ropes at Nationals, and can help with strategy and prep from practice day through comp day.

A good time was had by all last night at the first ever Footy Fest held at The Hollywood Theatre in AuSable Forks. Amateur filmmakers turned out to see who would claim the 1st place awards for both the <5 minute and <30 minute categories. Prizes included cash and Go Pro cameras for the winners as well as Skis from Liberty, a snowboard from Nitro and gift certificates from local sponsors for the runners-up.
Sponsors included NYSEF, Hardway Apparel, Go Pro Cameras, Placid Planet, Lifted Boardshop, Liberty Skis, and Whiteface Mt. The competition served as a fundraiser for USASA ADK athletes headed to Nationals at Copper Mt, CO April 2-12.

Sunday the 27th of March will be the day for the Freeride end-of-season picnic. Sign-up this weekend at the front desk for a food item to bring/donate to the cause. It all kicks off at 11:30am - location to be announced.
And don't forget about our upcoming events! The Skimeister is this Saturday the 19th and is open to Freeride athletes as well as our alpine counterparts. One run of GS, one run of paneled SL, and one run timed Ski Cross. Sign up at alpine reg or contact Brian Fitzgerald.
Saturday the 26th is the final Cross race of the season here at Whiteface. Open to all USSA/USASA members the race wraps up our Cross Camp that runs Wed-Fri. Abe Studler Wins "B" Mogul Championship

March 12: This past weekend, Abram Studler(Brant Lake) took first place in the USSA Eastern Qualifier Series Mogul Championships at Mount Snow Ski Resort in West Dover, Vermont. Out of 60 competitors, Abram out scored every one by over an entire point, a feat rarely seen in this fast paced sport. Battling illness and nerves, Abram finished his winning season solidifying the number one spot in the Eastern "B" competitors list, a spot that he held onto for the entire 2010-2011 season. Coach Mike Lynn said "Abe skied this competition like he has all year,confidant and composed" Abram now will compete in the next level with his first competition in April at Killington Mountain.

Empire State Games SX/BX Results

The 2nd Ski Cross and Snowboard Cross in Empire State Games history was held this past weekend at Whiteface Mt with tons of great racing. Last year's Scholastic & Open male snowboard champions, Dale Mortensen & Derek DiCastro repeated their dominating performances from 2010. NSA/NYSEF's Veronica Gaspar took the Scholastic Girls Ski category while fellow teammate Matt Brady took the Boys division with Josh Nixon right behind in 2nd. 2011 Footy Fest

What is Footy Fest? It's a winter-sports amateur film contest to benefit USASA ADK Nationals athletes. Anyone can enter with either an under 5 minute or under 30 minute film with footage from this season. Entries are $20 for each <5 minute and $40 for each <30 minute. The top three films will be shown at Footy Fest March 18th at The Hollywood Theatre in AuSable Forks. The top three also win prizes and the first place winners will win cash and a GoPro Helmet Hero HD camera.
Tickets are available at the door for $5 the night of the event. All entries must be submitted to NYSEF, P.O. Box 300, Wilmington, NY 12997 Attention: Mike Kirchner/Footy Fest. For more details contact mikek@nysef.org.

Empire State Games SX/BX Feb 25th and 26th at Whiteface

Congratulations to those who have qualified for the Empire State Games Ski and Snowboard Cross this week! The course will remain open to the public on Thursday the 24th while we work on some fine-tuning and re-install our start gate. Friday's training sessions for qualified athletes are from 9-11am and 12-2pm. The course will be closed to the public during these times so we can have some quality training.
All athletes must check-in and have a bib for training and competition.

Saturday's schedule is as follows: 8:30am Inspection & Practice - 9:30am One-Run Time Trial - 1pm - Heats/Finals. Awards will immediately follow in the NYSEF Training Center.

Derek DiCastro Wins Hole Shot SBX at Steamboat

In his second season on tour and his fifth race of the year Derek Dicastro(Rome,NY) made his mark with his first Nor-Am Snowboard Cross podium and it was a big one. Racing against many of the top riders in North America from both the junior and pro ranks Derek took the lead early in his final heat of The Hole Shot Tour in Steamboat Springs, CO and never gave it up.
In his previous four races he's managed to finish within the top 20 each time and had a 10th place just the day before his win. His time trials have consistently ranked among the top ten even while competing against top names such as Shaun Palmer(USA) and Robert Fagan(Can). Taking up the 2nd and 3rd places were brothers Bobby & Jarod Minghini(USA) fresh off their top five finishes the previous day.
Derek spent his time training and working last season at NYSEF/Whiteface, competing regionally in the USASA ADK Series, and travelling around the country on the USSA Revolution Tour, the top US junior snowboarding tour. After qualifying for the US Junior World SBX Team in his first year on tour, he placed tenth at the World Championships in New Zealand last August.
"It's been exciting watching Derek's rise through the ranks over the past couple of seasons. He's learning with every race and result and the other riders on tour are taking notice. This is still just the beginning for him." commented NYSEF Freeride Director Mike Kirchner.
His busy race schedule takes him next to Alpine Meadows, CA for two Hole Shot Nor-Am races next week, followed by a single Revolution Tour race at Boreal, CA the following Monday and then it's on to The Canyons, UT for the US Grand Prix National Snowboard Cross Championships.

USASA Cross Results from MLK Day

The first Ski and Boardercross races of the USASA ADK season took place on MLK Day at the North Creek Ski Bowl. Over 60 racers showed up to compete in both ski and snowboard categories with many NYSEF athletes turning in strong performances. In Skier Boys 9 & under, Camden Reilly placed 1st in his first SX race and brother Kaylen took 4th while Duncan Segger took 5th. Lindsey Rath took first in the girls 9 & under and older sister Melissa took first in the snowboard Breaker Girls(12-13yrs). In Skier Boys 10-12 Brian Gardiner took 1st just ahead of 2nd place finisher Gavin Fritz. In snowboard Breaker boys (12-13yrs) Michael Fahey took 1st followed by Alex Neron 2nd. In Skier Men (13-15yrs) Erik Sparkowski took 1st, Jake Wenn 2nd, Peter Palumbo 3rd, David Knapik 4th, Nate Foster 6th and Brad Jubitz 7th. Skier Men (16-18) NSA's Matt Brady took 1st, Josh Nixon 2nd, and Sam Johnston 3rd.
The next ADK comp is the January 30th Slopestyle at Whiteface followed by the 2nd SX/BX at the Ski Bowl. Come on out and give it a try.

Mt Hood Rev Tour Re-Cap

Well, the Freeride team arrived home safe & sound and a little weary early Sunday morning after a very succesful showing at the second stop of the Rev Tour in Mt Hood Meadows, OR. The weather was difficult with wind and rain assaulting the competitors in the latter stages of the week making Ski Slopestyle and Halfpipe tricky as well as both Ski and Snowboard Cross. Regardless of the conditions, the NYSEF Freeride team had its best results yet with everyone contributing in at least one event.
John Wilkins(NSA) followed up his 17th place in Slopestyle with a 35th in his first Jr National level Snowboard Cross(SBX). K.C. Brousseau was forced to pull out of both Halfpipe(HP) and Slopestyle(SS) due to a toe injury but managed to pull it together for an impressive 2nd in Friday's Ski Cross(SX) event. Steph Lawee(NSA) took 4th place in both SS and HP and made the podium in SX with a 2nd place finish. Matt Brady(NSA-SX) and Jessica Powers(SBX) both brought home 10th place finishes and Derek DiCastro took the fastest time trial in SBX but had a crash in his first heat placing him 13th.
All in all this was the most succesful Rev Tour showing yet for NYSEF athletes and much credit goes to Head Freeride Coach Justin Perry. Part coach, part tour guide and all heart, JP kept our athletes focused on their goals through trying conditions and we all look forward to their next showing at the tour stop in Boreal, CA in early February.
Way to go guys. Keep up the good work!

USSA Revolution Tour Update

Mt Hood Meadows - Tuesday, January 11 - The NYSEF Rev Tour Team posted it's first result of the latest tour stop with an impressive 17th place finish in slopestyle by John Wilkins. Coach Justin Perry passed on the news that John had landed his first "Double Cork Rodeo 900" on snow in his last practice run before the contest started. The trick is a double off-axis backflip with a 180 degree rotation. After witnessing another rider land the trick - one that John had practiced countless times this past summer at the Olympic Jumping Complex's water ramps - he knew that it could be done on the relatively small jumps on the Hood course.
John wasn't able to land the trick in his first competition run but pulled it out in the second run which put him in 6th place with 15 riders to go in his heat. The top 6 from each heat move on to finals. "Two riders bested John's score bumping him out of finals but his 17th overall was by far John's best finish at this level and his first major contest result in some time", said NYSEF Freeride Director Mike Kirchner. "The last few years he had been plagued by season-ending injuries but he has perservered and worked his way back into top form. This is a great result." Up next for John will be Friay's Snowboard Cross.
The competition for the rest of the team continues today with NSA's Steph Lawee and NYSEF's KC Brousseau competing in Ski Halfpipe.
The Revolution Tour is USSA's top-level Junior National Tour and features competition for up-and-coming skiers and snowboarders in the disciplines of Slopestyle, Halfpipe, and Ski & Snowboard Cross. Other local athletes attending and competing this week include Jessica Powers(SBX), NSA's Matt Brady(SX), and Derek Dicastro(SBX).

Weekend Training and Competition Results

Well, another weekend down and a some great results and training to report on. Abe Studler bested a field of over 40 & brought home double gold from the Sugarslide Moguls at Sugarbush with wins in both Moguls events Saturday and Sunday. Way to go Abe! He wins best result for the weekend for sure!
At another Vermont event, The Eastern Freeride Tour @ Okemo, NYSEF athlete Oliver Holmes took a 7th, Northwood's Nick Edwards took a 17th and NWS's Jason Castle took a 23rd out of 70 in Saturday's slopestyle. Way to represent!
On the snowboard side, the first USASA ADK in GS & SL took place Sunday at Mt Pisgah, and Ri Kirchner took home golds in both events, Alex Neron 1st in GS & 2nd in SL, Mike Fahey 2nd in GS & 1st in SL, and Anthony Russo two 2nds.
Weekend training consisted of many laps on the newly built Cross course on Wolf, Park training on Danny's/Brookside, and a new bump line at the bottom of the park as well as some great freeskiing.
This coming weekend we plan to have the start gate installed on the Cross course, a re-built Broadway Park, and a new top section of the Danny's/Brookside Park right through the jump line as snowmaking freshened things up - or buried them depending on your perspective.
Competitions this coming weekend - USSA "A" & "B" Moguls at Bristol Saturday thru Monday and USASA SkiCross and Boardercross at North Creek Ski Bowl on Monday, MLK Day. Check with your coach for details on these and more events coming up and check back for ongoing results from our USSA Revolution Tour athletes competing this week at Mt Hood Meadows!

Competition Season is Here!

Well, the holidays are over, the rust is off, and competition season is here! Though there is the odd contest here and there in December, January really kicks things into high gear. Athletes have gotten back to where they left off last year(hopefully!) and should now be setting their sights on achieving their comp goals. For some, that might mean hitting our first USASA slopestyle at the end of the month or heading off to one of the many USSA "B" events around the Northeast. Whichever way they choose to go it's important to leave enough time to practice and not to overload the schedule with comps every weekend. Mid-season burnout is no fun!
For the parents out there, take the time to talk to your kids and their coaches while you are at the hill and find out what their focus is and should be. Check out the USASA and USSA schedules online and as always, I am here to answer any and all of your questions.

USASA GS & SL @ Mt Pisgah Postponed

The snowboard races scheduled for Sunday January 2nd have been postponed due to a lack of snow and the closure of Mt Pisgah. Snowmaking will resume as temps allow and we are hoping that next weekend's event will go off as planned. More information regarding makeup dates and next week's event status can be found on the USASA ADK site here.
Regular program schedule will be in effect at Whiteface this Sunday.

2010 US Snowboard World Cup

Well, I'm back from Telluride, CO and the US Snowboard World Cup and ready to get into the holidays East Coast style! But first, a little recap on this year's event. Once again the event consisted of a Parallel Giant Slalom on Thursday the 17th, a Snowboard Cross on Friday, and a Team Snowboard Cross on Saturday. All events went smoothly and thanks to the snowmakers there was plenty of snow to build the courses. Beilieve it or not, there was not a lot of the natural stuff in SW Colorado. The majority of that western snow has been settling elsewhere like in Summit County where JP and the Rev Tour athletes spent their time recently. Anyhow, the racing was great for all events with the Americans right in the thick of it. USASA Adirondack Series rider Derek DiCastro was on hand again to train and forerun having just missed out on a starting spot. He ran the course well - especially since the first training day was also his first day back on snow since the Junior World Championships in New Zealand back in August! Double D will be competing this season on the Rev Tour and Hole Shot SBX events as well as the US Snowboard Cross Championships Grand Prix in Utah this February. I'll be updating his results as the season goes on and hopefully he will earn enough points to get his first World Cup start at this event next season.

So the competition season is here. This past week there have been competitions all over the country: from Grand Prix, to Rails to Riches, to Dew Tour, to Revolution Tour.

NYSEF was represented in the Revolution Tour at Copper, CO by Stephanie Lawee, John Wilkins, KC Brousseau, and myself (JP). The Revolution Tour is a place for armature freeride ski and snowboard athletes from all over the country to come together and compete for a place on the world cup circuit in the disciplines of slope style and halfpipe.

We departed from Albany on December 10^th in route to Denver. Anticipation and stoke levels were at an all time high. We were all very excited to leave the east and go ride where there was “actually” snow.

As it turned out there was plenty of it. We hopped on a shuttle at the airport in Denver that took us from the sunny weather in Denver up I 70 into a blizzard. By the time we had come out on the western side of the Loveland Tunnel it was snowing harder than it had all year so far back east.

It snowed hard all night. So hard that summit county closed the interstate between the Loveland Tunnel and Vail for about three hours. By the Way, this just so happened to be at the time that we had gone to Frisco to get groceries for the week. If you ask anyone from our crew they will tell you about how we got stranded on the bus in Frisco due to the snowstorm; but hey, it left us with lots of powder skiing the following day!

Needles to say John, Steph and I were thoroughly happy and whooped after the day.

The following day we decided to get down to business and we went to Keystone Mt to train on their terrain park features. They had so much to offer and we had a great day.

On Monday we were joined by fellow teammate KC Brousseau. As the week went on the level of enthusiasm grew amongst the team. This was only magnified when the weather continued to get more and more sunny throughout the week. The halfpipe and slopestyle courses were in awesome shape. Every competitor was wanting and willing to give the competition their all.

Although the enthusiasm was everywhere, it had no way to safe guard us from injury. KC had a bummed ankle from when he arived, John knuckled the second jump on a Back side cork 7 and hurt his knee, and Steph had severe shin bang. Also, Steph's lip and her pole got into a fight on the landing of the second jump in the slopestyle course.

Everyone on the team felt somewhat skunked, but instead of letting it get us down it fueled a fire deep inside everyone’s competitive spirit. The consensus is that we did not represent our fullest potential at this revolution tour stop. Also there is still a long season ahead of us. We are all determined to work hard and dedicate more training time before the next revolution tour stop at Mt Hood Meadows.

Hey Everyone,

The First day of NYSEF Freeride kicked of with a bang. Excitement levels were high and good times were abundant throughout all of our groups.

Its crazy to think about competitions already because we only just had our first day. However, competition season is already almost upon us.

On Friday I will be traveling with John Willkins, Steph Lawee, and KC Brousseau to Copper Mt CO for the first stop of the USSA Revolution Tour. This series is a direct route for amateur athletes to move on to Pro Level Events, and to World Cup Half Pipe and soon to be Slopestyle events.

Freeride Information Session

Hello everyone,
YES, it's finally time to get this season going! Our firt weekend program day at Whiteface is this Sunday December 5th. Before we head out onto the slopes though, the Freeride staff and I will be holding an information session for all our ski and snowboard athletes and their families starting at 8:45am in the NYSEF building. Attendance is mandatory for weekend athletes and highly encouraged for all parents and families. This will be the time to meet the coaches and get info about training schedules, competition tracks, expectations for the season, etc. and ask questions while we are all in one place. The plan will be to get through with the basics asap so everyone can hopefully get out on snow by 9:30am.
So, get your questions ready for Sunday and of course if you want to pick up a pass and ski or ride on Saturday please feel free to do so. Our staff orientation will be taking place but we will be available to assist you from 8 - 9:30am.

It's almost time again!! Now it's got to get cold and stay cold so we can truly be ready for the 2011 event season. We've added a new mountain and some new events for the 5th year of the USASA ADK. West Mt has joined the fold with it's first ADK Slopestyle on February 13th. Billed as either the Valentine's Day Massacre or The Teddy Bear Lovefest we hope to see some new talent from the "downstate" crew.

The Empire State Winter Games is back at Whiteface this February 25&26 with the 2nd year of SkiCross & Boardercross. Those NY residents interested in taking a shot at the State Championship will need to qualify at one of the designated qualifier events through either the ADK, Western NY, or Catskills series in January 2011. Go to http://www.usasa.org/ and check the homepage of your series for more info. You can find full USASA schedule info there too.

I'm currently working on scheduling a couple USASA railjam events to keep the urban sliders happy and those details will be posted here and on the ADK homepage as I have them. Though not recognized as qualifiers for the national championships they're open to all USASA members and who knows...maybe some day we'll have Railjam Champions!

Focused on snowboard and freestyle ski athletes, this program works to condition and develop spatial awareness, body control, and proper mechanics in an organized and controlled setting. Tricks are practiced and tested on one of several trampolines and then transitioned to the ramps where athletes jump into the 750,000 gallon pool. Logical progressions are stressed as well as general conditioning. All sessions begin with stretching exercises and a warm-up which may include stairs or short-distance runs.
Athletes meet at the pool at 8:30am for warm-up then move to the trampoline and water ramps according to schedule organized by facility staff. Full day program consists of morning and afternoon sessions. Running shoes are necessary as well as appropriate equipment (skis or snowboard, boots, bindings) as well as helmet, approved life vest or PFD, towel and mouth guard. Pool is not heated so wetsuits are recommended though not mandatory. All athletes must be at least 10 years of age, possess intermediate riding/skiing ability, and have proof of current USSA or USASA membership. (www.ussa.org , www.usasa.org ) Lunch is not provided though there is a concession available on site.

USASA ADK 2010 Nationals Results

Well, the 2010 USASA Nationals are just a memory but the Adirondacks made their mark with their best showing to date. Overall, 26 competitors from our region made the trip to Copper Mt, CO to vie for the championship title in their respective age categories. From that 26 we had 15 top tens, 4 podiums, and two national champions!
This is the fourth full season for USASA competition in the Adirondacks and to have this kind of showing is a testament to local talent and the growing involvement in competitive skiing and snowboarding.
The NYSEF program was represented well with 14 athletes between ski and snowboard. Staff this year consisted of Freestyle Head Coach Chris Kasper, Snowboard Coaches Tommy Thomson and Bob Witt, Vicki Kirchner Starter on the Slalom course, and me, Mike Kirchner, as Operations Crew Chief. The number of athletes kept everyone busy as well as the general atmosphere. All five venues (HP,SS,BX/SX,GS, & SL) run simultaneously each day for six days! There was alot of texting gong on - checking on each others athletes and following the progress on nearby courses. And of course there was alot to celebrate!

NYSEF Stands Proud at Nationals!

Copper Mountain, CO- The ADK Series’ NYSEF Freestyle Ski Team represented the North Country soundly with 9 top-ten finishes! For the girls: Lindsey Rath secured a 7th place stand in Skier X for the girls 9 and under while Jacinda Riggs stood strong with her 11th place finish for Skier X women 13-15.
Both Jake Doan and Dillon Calderone made it to Open Class Slope Style Finals with 7th and 10th place overall finishes. Both Jake and Dillon fought neck and neck all season, still managing to support one another and come out on top. Nick Edwards laid down a 13th place spot in Men’s 15-18 Slope Style with Teammate KC Brousseau finishing 11th.
Skier X for the Men 16-18 was the most competitive, but NYSEF stood out with Nick Edwards’ 13th place finish, Josh Nixon’s 9th, Peter Palumbo’s 8th, and Adam Guidon’s 4th place finish in his final USASA Skier X for Skier men with neck to neck finishes in all heats amongst the Nation’s top skiers.
KC Brousseau threw down a solid run in Men’s Half Pipe 13-15 receiving a 4th place finish which gave him a 2nd place finish in Skier Men 13-15 combined! KC Isn’t finished yet, he is currently packing for Mammoth to continue to film with Meathead Productions on an all expense paid trip that he won during Solomon’s Jib Academy at Sunday River in Bethel, ME.

DiCastro Selected for Junior Worlds Boardercross Team

With a strong showing this season, competing on the USSA Revolution Tour and Nor-Am circuit, Derek DiCastro jumped to third in the US junior national rankings earning him a spot on the US SBX squad headed to Junior Worlds in Cardrona, New Zealand this coming August.
Derek's first full year on the SBX circuit paid off as his results progressed along with his experience. Starting with a 17th place finish at Copper Mt in February, he followed it up with a 10th in Boreal, CA and a 5th at Mt Hood Meadows in March. Right on the heels of the Rev Tour, he raced in two Nor-Ams on the same Mt Hood course garnering a 6th and a 10th place finish against a strong international field.
The Revolution Tour, which is the premier snowboard event series showcasing up and coming US talent, can serve as a stepping stone for junior riders as well as a place for veterans to gain much needed training and race experience. Derek's results this season placed him in 7th overall. It was this result combined with his Nor-Ams that put him in the topr three for junior boardercrossers.
Along with his inclusion on the US Junior Worlds Team, Derek will also be invited to be a member of Project Gold. Camp being held in Mammoth Mt., CA this coming May. Project Gold is a USSA program that identifies the best junior talent in each discipline and invites them to train with US Team coaches and athletes

Bethel, ME- K.C. Brousseau shined last weekend at Sunday River's Solomon Jib Academy with a first place finish earning him a trip to Mammoth, next year's Solomon skies and a bye into semi-finals for this weekend's Dumont Cup, also at Sunday River. Team mate and fellow Northwood School student, Nick Edwards followed close with a second place finish.
Ellicottville, NY- The EQS NYSEF Team represented us well last weekend at Holiday Valley for the EQS Freestyle Championships. Abe Studler, Davis Sprague, Oliver Holmes, Jason Castle and Art Griffin all skied well amongst the East's best Freestyle Skiers with Abe and Oliver both pulling in top ten finishes!
We wish the best of luck to our Freestyle Skiers headed to Copper Mountain next week for USASA Nationals: Jake Doan, Lindsey Rath, Jacinda Riggs, K.C. Brousseau, Peter Palumbo, and Nick Edwards. Good luck also goes out to our competing Snowboarders as well: Melissa Rath, Jess Powers, Karl Lakata, Colin Grady, Steve Gooditis, Ri Kirchner, and Mike Fahey.

Whiteface Mountain- NYSEF was well represented over the weekend at our Western Regional Freestyle Final's with 5 podium's! Oliver Holmes clenched two first place finishes in Slope Style and Aerials bringing him to a third place finish in combined. Art Griffin was close behind Oliver in Aerials with a second place finish while Jason Castle grabbed the second place finish for Slope Style. Abram Studler was able to obtain 4th in moguls despite his broken thumb! Congratulations to all who represented NYSEF in the Finals: Davis Sprague, Oliver Holmes, Art Griffin, Nate Foster, Abram Studler, Jason Castle, Patrick Skalski!
This weekend the team travels to Holiday Valley for EQS Eastern Championships.
Waterville Valley, NH- Jake Doan clenched a third place finish in his age group and 7th overall for Junior Olympics! Jake will be attending Westminster next semester with alumni Hannah Doan and Andrew Wilson.

Empire State Games Ski Cross & Snowboard Cross

The first ever Ski Cross and Snowboard Cross in Empire State Games history was contested this past weekend at Whiteface Mountain with NYSEF skiers and riders making a strong showing. The NYSEF run event was a great success and the competitors all had high praise for the course built on the Wolf trail by Whiteface park staff and NYSEF Freeride coaches.
In the scholastic men's division (13-16yrs) KC Brousseau took the gold and Josh Nixon the silver while in the women's division Jacinda Riggs took silver. For the snowboarders, Jessica Powers took the silver in the women's Open and Derek Dicastro the gold in the men's Open. The scholastic division saw Lake Placid locals Dale Mortensen and Colin Grady take the first and second positions and NYSEF rider Karl Lakata take 6th.
The event was the competition debut for the cross course and for NYSEF's new start gate, both of which will remain in place for the final USASA BX/SX of the season March 7th and for training the remainder of the season.

Holimont, Ellicottville, NY- Abram Studler was able to hold down a 4th place finish in the Holimont Mogul Competition with teammate Art Griffin finishing 19th on Saturday, Feruary 13th,2010.
Buffalo Ski Club, Colden, NY- What better time to hold the Buffalo Aerial Assault than just before Buffalo Ski Club's own Matt Depeters ships off to Vancouver to represent USA in Olympic Aerials! Matt has spent much time training in Lake Placid under the ORDA and NYSEF. We wish Matt the very best of luck!!! Be sure to catch him Monday at 9pm Eastern.
NYSEF's authority was represented well on Valentines day during the assault with Abram Studler taking 12th in the first competition and 10th the second with Art Griffin clenching 5th in both.
Whiteface Mtn., Lake Placid, NY- Dillon Calderone secured a first place finish in the USASA Slope Style with teammate Jake Doan on his tail for a close 2nd place finish for Open Class skiers. KC Brouseau once again led the Skier Men with Oliver Holmes close in second. Skier Boys were dominated by NYSEF's Brian Gardiner (3rd), Nate Foster (2nd), and Gavin Fritz (1st)!
Youth Men Snowboarder's was led by Colin Grady in first place. Jonathan Locklin finished third for Junior Men Snowboarder's, and Katie Kennedy won the Junior Women's snowboard class.
We wish all athletes the best of luck in the 2010 Olympics and this week's Empire State Games!

The Freestyle Ski Team stormed the Northeast this past weekend, with Jake Doan grabbing a 10th place finish in the Waterville Valley Slope Style, and Jason Castle sitting in the middle of the pack amongst the east's best free riders. Other big winners were Lindsey Rath, Nate Foster, Jacinda Riggs, and KC Brousseau all clenched first place finishes in Saturday's skier cross at Gore Mt. Brian Gardiner and Nick Edwards were both 2nd for their age groups.
Sunday was the Maui North Slope style where Abram Studler took home first for his age group while the Jake, Oliver, KC, Nick, Jason and Coach Dillon all sessioned the 50 foot Pisgah Jump. Stay Tuned for great pic's compliments of Jake Sporn.

Derek DiCastro 17th at Rev Tour BX

Copper Mt., CO - Derek DiCastro, shown at left before forerunning this year's World Cup event in Telluride, made his debut on the USSA Revolution Tour this past weekend placing 17th. Though Derek has won the all-around amateur title twice before at USASA Nationals this marks his first start on the USSA tour.
Racing against some of the best young boardercrossers in the country, Derek took 6th in the time trials and had a transfer spot in his first heat but spun out while attempting to pass the leader. In boardercross, the first two across the finish advance to the next round while the bottom two drop out.
Though a 17th in his first start is respectable it's the time trial result that really proves he's capable of racing against the best. He's shown that he can handle world cup level courses and has an uncanny ability to adjust to terrain that eats up lesser riders.
Derek relocated to NYSEF/Whiteface from Rome, NY in order to train on the big mountain and prepare for his push towards his goal of a spot on the FIS World Cup.
Jessica Powers also made her debut in the ladies event but just missed out on qualification. They will both have a shot at the next stop in Boreal, CA in March.
Jonathan Locklin is also along and will be competing in the Slopestyle event taking place on Wednesday. Check back for details.
Sunday February 7th was the first of three USSA/FIS Boardercross events on the Revolution Tour this season. The Tour is open to all licensed competitors but is meant to showcase younger riders and be a stepping stone to the Grand Prix (US National) and World Cup tours.

USASA Nationals NYSEF House

Currently looking into securing housing for USASA Nationals on site at Copper Mountain. We are trying to gauge the interest in shared housing (athletes and/or parents)and possibly ground transportation if we all travel together. We are looking at the dates of 4/1/2010 to 4/10 or 4/11/2010. Looking at a base price of $45 per night per person (does not include food). House parents on site to provide supervision and group skiing/riding supervision possible for an extra fee. Shared food costs is a possiblity. USASA Slopestyle Sunday January 24th

The first Slopestyle on the USASA Adirondack calendar is coming up this Sunday at Whiteface. Registration takes place from 7:30 - 8:30am in guest services in the main lodge due to the NYSEF Training Center being used for Freestyle World Cup. Practice for skiers and boarders opens with the lifts @ 8:30am. The course will consist of both jumps and rails located in the Brookside Terrain Park. Comp start is scheduled for 10am. Awards to immediately follow. Cost is $25 and USASA membership is required. For more info please check the link to our series page.

NYSEF Free-Ride Turns Heads from Rochester to Maine

NYSEF Free-Ride was represented well this weekend from Western New York to Bethel Maine in both USSA and USASA events.

Gore Mountain hosted the first two Adirondack Series Boarder/Skier Cross events this year with over 40 competitors. Jacinda Riggs claimed first place in both female skier cross races, setting her on a sound foundation for Nations held at Copper Mountain, CO later this March.
Melissa Rath took second in both of her Menehune (10-11) female boarder cross races while NYSEF teammate Joshua Boise held a third place podium spot on the Menehune (10-11) boys boarder cross for his first race.
Michael Fahey secured second in both of his Breaker (12-13) boys boarder cross races gearing him up for the future youth (14-15) boarder cross where Dale Mortenson earned a first place in his first race, and second to follow, flip-flopping spots with Colin Grady with a second place finish followed by first his second race while Karl Lakata finished third in both races.
NYSEF girls Katie Kennedy, Jessica Powers, and Rachel Puma all finished first within their age groups in both races.
It's no surprise that World Cup snowboarder Derek DiCastro took first for open class boarder cross with Jason Minch not far behind in both races.
Sydney Loh stood second on the podium for both races for skier girls 9 and under with Lindsey Rath third by a nose on the first race.
Skier cross boys (10-12) was possibly the most competitive last weekend with Brian Gardiner finishing first, followed by Brad Jubitz (second) and Nate Foster fourth. The second race consisted of a tight finish by Nate Foster first, Brian Gardiner second, and Brad Jubitz third.
The NYSEF Team and Adirondack Series is ready for this Sunday's Slope Style which will add to Whiteface's excitement correlating with the World Cup!

NYSEF's Abram Studler shined at Bristol Mountains' Toyota Freestyle Mogul Fest with a first place finish in his age group and fourth over all for the first day, and 4th in his age group the second day.

Art Griffin made the podium with a third place finish Sunday at Sunday River's Eastern Throw Down Slope Style event, which puts him that much closer to making Eastern Regional Finals held at Whiteface Mountain in March.

Be sure to come down to the Olympic Village this weekend to witness World Cup Freestyle!!!

The North Country had a rocky winter start for sure, but a few snow dances later we are back in the [(short) swing] of things!
Jake Doan made his presence known Saturday at the first stop in the Gatorade Freeflow Tour at Big Boulder with a 2nd place finish paving the way for KC Brousaeu's 4th place finish. Both Athletes are also scholars at Northwood Academy.

NYSEF wasn't done showing off in PA! Abe Studler and Art Griffin threw down at the Preston Cup at Waterville Valley with Abe finishing 1st in Moguls Saturday and 4th in Big Air Sunday. Art Griffin was not far behind in Sunday's Big Air with a 10th place finish. Not too bad for the futures of our program and the sport itself!

This weekend the team travels to Sunday River for a Mogul and Slope Style event, as well as Gore for a Skier Cross.

USASA BX/SX at The North Creek Ski Bowl @ Gore

It's time for the first doubleheader of the Adirondack season this Sunday January 17th at The North Creek Ski Bowl. The staff at Gore Mt has been hard at work making and pushing snow into shape all this week in preparation for the upcoming event which will serve as a qualifier for the inaugural Empire State Games BX/SX to be held February 18-20 at Whiteface. Registration will be in the yurt at the base of the Bowl from 10-11am. Cost is $35 for the two races held back-to-back, competitor's lift ticket is $10 extra.
If you've wanted to try the sport this is the place to do it. The track is short but fun yet still challenging once the heats begin and everyone is racing side by side. Skiers and boarders of all ages are welcome. USASA membership is mandatory though first timers can try the event for just the cost of registration and upgrade later if they want.

We're almost halfway through the holiday season and though everyone is fearing the cold snap the good news is the snowmakers can make lots of snow for us. Today and Friday(New Year's Day) are off-days for the snowboard crew while the Freestyle skiers are just off Friday. Remember to layer up the next few days and keep a sharp edge on your gear. A little fresh snow tonight should soften things up though. Tonight is the NYSEF Snow-A-Thon from 6-8pm at the Ski Jumps in Lake Placid. Make sure to bring your pledges along as all proceeds go directly to your specific program to help keep costs down and invest in needed gear. Also, don't forget, this weekend marks the start of the USASA Adirondack competition season. Saturday GS followed by Sunday SL. Registration will be in the NYSEF Training Center from 7:30 - 8:30am. Both are double events, back to back (so 4 runs). This is a snowboard only event - registration is $25. For more info go to www.usasa.org , and check out the "Adirondack" region page. US Snowboard World Cup

Telluride, CO - Well another US World Cup is in the books and I've gotta say it was a great one. The weather was cold and snowy during the building of the snowboardcross course but cleared up for all the races. We held two PGS races - one each on Tuesday and Thursday - and two SBX's - individuals on Saturday and Team SBX on Sunday.
In Tuesday's Parallel Giant Slalom race Matthew Morison(CAN) took first followed by Benjamin Karl(AUT) and Matthieu Bozzetto(FRA). On the ladies side, first went to Fraenzi Maegert-Kohli(SUI), second to Amelie Kober(GER), and third to Kimiko Zakreski(CAN). Best US results were Chris Klug(15th), Justin Reiter(16th), and Michelle Gorgone(11th).
In Thursday' race Jasey Jay Anderson(CAN) took first followed by teammate Michael Lambert(CAN) and Rok Flander(SLO). For the ladies, Alena Zavarina(RUS)took first, Marion Kreiner(AUT) second, and Ine Meschik(AUT) third. Best US finish was Adam Smith(14th) and Lindsay Lloyd(17th). Action from the PGS will be broadcast this Saturday the 26th at 1:30pm on NBC and Sunday, January 3rd at 5pm on Versus.
In SBX action, the athletes were put to the test on a long, challenging course designed and built by Olympic course builder, Jeff Ihaksi, and his assitant Johnie Balfour. Many riders agreed that the bar has been raised again with his design and were psyched to race under the bluebird skies of Telluride.
Once again, the Adirondacks own, Derek DiCastro travelled to the event to forerun the course. Derek quickly figured out the course and managed to get a little camera work in for the production crew. He was fitted with a lipstick camera on his lower leg to record the point of view as he raced down the track against another athlete. We're hoping we'll see the footage this Sunday when the event airs on NBC at 1pm.
The men's event saw Pierre Vaultier(FRA) come in first, with Robert Fagan(CAN)second, and former halfpipe Olympic medalist Ross Powers(USA) coming in third. The strong American field then took 5 of the next 6 spots. On the ladies side, Maelle Ricker(CAN) took first, Simona Meiler(SUI)second, and Dominique Maltais(CAN) third. The top US finishers were 17-year old Faye Gulini(8th) and Lindsay Jacobellis(11th).
Last but not least was the Team SBX event. A test event the last two years, this was the first official FIS World Cup Team SBX. The riders, who normally ride solo, got fired up for their teammates and their country while vying for the title. The US managed to podium in both the ladies' and men's competitions and Lindsay Jacobellis made up for her 11th place in the solo event with a first place with teammate Faye Gulini. Men's podium - 1st FRA(De La Rue, Vaultier), 2nd USA(Holland, Baumgartner), 3rd CAN(Robertson, Neilson) Ladies' - 1st USA(Jacobellis,Gulini), 2nd CAN(Ricker, Maltais), 3rd SUI(Frieden, Meiler).

Great First Weekend

NYSEF kicked of it's first official training weekend with drills, fun, and a much better outlook than that of the week prior. It was great finally getting to meet all of the athletes and parents. We anticipate a wonderful season by the escalating level of excitement by everyone. The park is growing everyday with added features and the terrain on Essex and Lower Cloud had bumped up quite nicely for those freedoggers.
NYSEF left its mark at Sunday's Cunningham Rail Jam with John Wilkins (NSA) taking second overall for men's snowboarder's and Jake Doan, KC Brousseau, and Nick Edwards (all of Northwood School)taking 1st, 2nd, 3rd for overall skier while Art Griffin pulled off a 1st place for boy skiers.
We are looking forward to this weekend 's training and am shooting to put in some moguls and a kicker for those doggers. We are expecting a partly sunny day Saturday and few snow showers Sunday with both days expected to stay in the low to mid 20's.

Greetings to all Freestyle Skiers new and returning! I am so happy to be able to work with all of you this season after taking a year off to nurse a knee injury. We have a lot going on this year with World Cup, and Western “B” Regional Finals here at Whiteface.

Please take this weekend to come out to see the mountain, grab your passes, and allow me to introduce myself as well as answer any questions you may have. We will pick up next weekend with a full training regimen. Parents, please speak to your children about what their goals are for this season, as well as which event series they wish to participate in. I will also ask that I receive a list of allergies or health issues to be kept on file.

NYSEF Program Update

I’d like to welcome all those new to Freeride as well as those returning from last season. As some of you may already know, due to the lack of terrain available this weekend at Whiteface Mt., we will not be starting weekend training until next weekend, Saturday, Dec 12th . The projected trails as of today are Excelsior, Summit Express and Upper Valley - with all skiers and riders downloading on the gondola. With the lack of easy terrain and the amount of athletes both in the alpine and freeride programs vying for the same space as the public, it was decided it would be safer to wait until more terrain becomes available.
Please feel free to come in and pick up your pass and take the chance to meet the staff and get more info on the season ahead. For those on the freestyle ski side, Chris Kasper will be on site, taking the place of the injured Justin Perry, as well as Mike Lynn. And on the snowboard side, I will be around, along with returning coach Tommy Thompson, and new coach Bob Witt.

The Season is Almost Here

If it would only snow now we'd be all set.
For those of you new to the program as well as those of you returning, welcome! This is the place to look for updated information on the program, shedules, athletes, competitions, etc. as we work our way through the winter.
Our first official program day for the weekenders will be Sunday, December 6, 2009. Use Saturday to freeride or ski and break in the new gear but on Sunday be prepared to get to work. The program day starts the same as all the rest - all freeride athletes geared up and ready to go in front of the NYSEF building by 8:15am. Remember - helmets are mandatory. After a little warm-up we head to the lift for our first runs. If you're running late just check in at the front desk where Linda will call the coach on the radio and link you up, probably on the next run. Normally we take a short break at "Mid-station" around 10am - just a quick warm-up - and then it's back on the hill until lunch. We will announce the set lunch time on the first day and then it usually stays the same for the season. Parents can take their kids for lunch in the main lodge or use the NYSEF main room to sit and eat. Lunch lasts for 45 minutes and then it's back on the hill until 2:00pm, the end of the program day.
Make sure to account for changing weather - it's always good to have an extra layer, neck gaiter or scarf, hand warmers, etc. available. Athletes may leave a backpack in the lodge during the day which is always staffed. Also, you may want to have a few bucks on hand to get a hot chocolate, etc.
The Freeride calendar (above) will continue to be updated as the season progresses. There you will find freestyle and snowboard events and training days applicable to our full and part-time programs. This is not a complete listing however, so make sure to check with your coach to be sure you've got the right dates.
